Heala vs the alternatives · 3 min read

A Bevel alternative that also logs food and lifting

A Bevel alternative is an app that gives you the same daily recovery picture and also logs the food and training behind it. Heala does that on the phone alone: it reads sleep and recovery signals, logs meals by photo, barcode or voice, and writes a training week from what you lift.

What is Bevel, and who looks for an alternative?

Bevel reads recovery from your wearable. It is a good fit if you wear an Apple Watch and mainly want a clear daily read on sleep, recovery and strain. People start looking for an alternative when they want the cause of a low score on the same screen, or when they do not own a watch.

That gives four practical questions to ask of any alternative: does it need a wearable, does it log food, does it plan your strength training, and can it track body shape. The full side-by-side is on Heala vs Bevel.

Do you need a wearable for a Bevel alternative?

Not with Heala. Nothing is locked behind owning a watch, ring or strap. Of the fourteen signals that can feed Heala's morning recovery score, exactly four need a sensor: overnight HRV, resting heart rate, wrist temperature and respiratory rate. The other ten come from your phone and your own logs.

If you do own a device, it still helps. An Apple Watch, Oura, WHOOP, Garmin or Fitbit shares sleep and heart-rate data through Apple Health or Health Connect, and Heala reads it. See how a recovery score works without a wearable and how Heala reads Apple Health.

Which alternative logs food and lifting as well as recovery?

Heala logs meals four ways: photograph the plate, scan a barcode, say it, or pick a saved food. Photo estimates can be corrected before saving. Sets can be tapped in or spoken, for example "squats 5x5 at 100kg", and one sentence can write sleep, a workout and a meal together.

That matters because a recovery number reports a total, not a cause. When food, sets and sleep sit in one diary, a low morning comes with its likely reasons beside it. The coach reads your own logged data and can change things for you, as described in the AI coach page.

What about strength programming and body tracking?

Heala writes a full training week from your goal, days and equipment, then changes it using what you lifted, ate and slept. The logic behind that is the five dials of progressive overload, not adding weight every week regardless.

For body shape, four guided photos produce a 3D body you can rotate, with ten circumference estimates and a body-fat estimate. These are trend tools, editable before saving, and not medical measurements. Scan again later and compare the two.

Worth keeping: “A recovery score tells you how you are. A diary tells you why.”

How do you try a Bevel alternative without losing anything?

Run both for two weeks. Keep Bevel as it is, log in Heala, and compare how each describes your mornings. Recovery baselines take about two weeks to settle in any app, so judge the trend rather than the first few days. Heala's side of the WHOOP-style picture is also covered in use WHOOP with Apple Health and Heala.

Heala is free to download on iPhone, Android coming soon. Core tracking and food logging are free, so you can test the whole loop first. This is educational information, not medical advice.

Quick answers

What is a good alternative to Bevel?

Heala is one if you want recovery plus food, lifting and body tracking in a single app. It reads sleep and recovery signals, logs meals by photo, barcode or voice, and writes a training week. Heala is free to download on iPhone, Android coming soon.

Does Heala need an Apple Watch like Bevel?

No. Heala works on the phone alone, and nothing is locked behind owning a wearable. An Apple Watch, Oura, WHOOP, Garmin or Fitbit can sharpen sleep and recovery through Apple Health or Health Connect, but only four of fourteen recovery signals need a sensor.

Can I log food and workouts in the same app as my recovery score?

Yes, in Heala. Meals go in by photo, barcode, voice or saved foods, sets by tapping or speaking, and sleep arrives from your phone or Apple Health. The recovery score sits beside them, so a low morning comes with its likely causes.

Does Heala write strength training plans?

Yes. Tell Heala your goal, days and equipment and it writes a full training week, then adjusts it from what you lifted, ate and slept. It progresses, deloads and moves sessions rather than just adding weight every week.

Can Heala track body composition from photos?

Yes. Four guided photos produce a 3D body you can rotate, plus ten circumference estimates and a body-fat estimate. They are trend tools you can edit before saving, not medical measurements, and you can scan again later to compare.
