Heala vs Cal AI: what happens after the photo
Cal AI turns a photo into a calorie estimate fast, and it does that job well. Heala takes the same photo and connects it to targets, training, recovery and a coach. This is about what the number is for.
The photo is the easy part
Point a camera at a plate and both apps do the same thing. Cal AI returns calories and macros in seconds. So does Heala — by photo, voice or barcode, whichever is closest to hand. Both estimates carry the same caveat: a camera cannot see oil, sugar in a sauce, or how densely the rice is packed. Expect either app to be roughly right per meal and useful in aggregate.
So the interesting question is not which app reads a photo better. It is what happens to the number once it exists. In Cal AI, it counts against a daily calorie budget. In Heala, it feeds daily targets, an adaptive training plan, a morning recovery score and an AI coach that can act on it. Same photo, different pipeline.
Where Cal AI is better
Cal AI is simpler, and that is not a small thing. It does one job — food in, estimate out — so there is less interface, less to configure and less to ignore. If you have never tracked food before, a single-purpose app is easier to keep using, and the app you keep using beats the app you abandon. Cal AI is also available today, while Heala launches on 1 October 2026. A head start you can download is a real advantage.
There is a focus risk in the other direction too. Heala covers food, training, recovery, strain, cycles, habits and a 3D body scan from 4 photos. Breadth is the point of this comparison, but breadth costs attention. If a dashboard of ten things would make you close the app, weigh that honestly.
What happens after the estimate
In Heala the estimate lands in a day that already has structure. Calorie and macro targets come from your goal and your weight trend — seven-day medians that cancel scale noise, not this morning's reading. Training sits beside food: an adaptive plan, GPS cardio and all-day strain feeding the same ledger. Eat light on a heavy training day and the mismatch is visible by dinner, not at the end of the month.
The next morning, recovery closes the loop. Heala scores it from sleep, HRV, resting heart rate and yesterday's strain — with a watch if you have one, without one if you don't. And the AI coach can act on all of it: 41 actions on your real data, from adjusting a target to logging the meal you just described out loud. Cal AI hands you a number and a budget to spend it against. Heala hands the number to the rest of your day.
What a comparison can't settle
No article settles taste. If Cal AI's single screen feels calm and Heala's scope feels like homework, that feeling will decide more than any feature list. The same goes for what you already own — your habit and history in another app have real value no spec sheet can price.
What you can settle: Heala is free forever with an optional Pro tier, and it launches on 1 October 2026. Until then the waitlist is open, and the first 1,000 sign-ups get a founding 15% off for life. If the pipeline after the photo is what you're missing, that is a cheap way to find out.
How to choose
If a fast calorie estimate is the whole job, Cal AI's focus is a genuine advantage. Pick the simpler tool.
If food should feed targets, training and recovery, you want the estimate connected to a plan. That is Heala's job.
Heala reads Apple Health and Health Connect, so whatever your Oura, WHOOP or Garmin syncs there feeds recovery and strain.
Run both for a week. Log the same meals. Keep the one whose numbers you act on.
Quick answers
Can I use both apps at once?
Yes. Nothing stops you running both. Heala also reads nutrition from Apple Health and Health Connect, so if another app writes its food log there, those entries can flow into your Heala day. In practice most people settle on one log within a couple of weeks — split logging makes weekly totals unreliable, and the weekly total is the number that matters.
Will my Cal AI history move over?
There is no direct importer. Heala reads nutrition entries synced to Apple Health or Health Connect, so anything written there can come along. But history matters less than it feels like it does: targets, the recovery score and the weight trend all rebuild from your first week or two of fresh data in Heala.
Is photo logging accurate enough to matter?
Photo estimates are estimates, in both apps. A camera misses oil, sauces and portion density. Treat any single meal as roughly right and the weekly total as the real signal. That is also why Heala pairs the food log with a smoothed weight trend — over weeks, the scale settles arguments the camera cannot.
