Heala vs WHOOP: recovery without the strap
WHOOP pairs excellent dedicated hardware with a membership and measures you around the clock. Heala reads the same overnight signals from the watch or phone you already own, and puts the score next to food, training and body.
Two roads to one number
Both apps hand you a number in the morning that says how ready you are. Both build it from the same raw material: how you slept, overnight heart-rate variability, resting heart rate, and how hard yesterday was. The difference is not the number. It is what you have to buy, wear and subscribe to before the number appears — and what sits next to it once it does.
What WHOOP does better
WHOOP measures more, more of the time. The strap is a dedicated sensor with no screen, worn around the clock — you charge it from a slide-on battery pack without taking it off, so charging never forces a gap in the record. Continuous all-day heart rate feeds a strain score a phone alone cannot match, and its sleep staging comes from hardware built for exactly that job.
If measurement fidelity is your first priority and you are happy to wear the strap and keep the membership running, WHOOP is the stronger instrument. A comparison cannot settle taste either: some people like a screenless band, and some already live inside its ecosystem. Own that decision before you read on.
What the morning score requires
WHOOP's score needs three things: the strap, an active membership — WHOOP is sold as a membership, with the strap included — and the phone app. Heala's score needs the phone you already carry. If you own a watch — Apple Watch, Garmin, anything that writes to Apple Health or Health Connect — Heala reads its sleep, HRV and resting heart rate overnight. If you don't, it still produces a score from phone sleep data and the training you log. Fewer parts is not automatically better. It is just fewer parts.
What sits next to the score
WHOOP tells you that you are run down. What you do about it lives elsewhere: your food in one app, your training plan in another, your weight trend in a third. Heala's bet is that the score matters less than what surrounds it. A low-recovery morning adjusts the day's training plan, sits beside the food you photographed at dinner, and feeds an AI coach that can act on your real data — 41 actions, from reshuffling a session to logging a meal.
Heala launches 1 October 2026. The core is free forever; Pro is optional. Waitlist members in the first 1,000 get founding pricing — 15% off the web plan for life. If you already wear a WHOOP, you don't have to choose today: whatever it shares to Apple Health flows straight into Heala's recovery, food and training views.
How to choose
A dedicated 24/7 sensor with no charging gaps is WHOOP's territory. If fidelity outranks everything else, wear the strap.
Apple Watch, Garmin or Oura data reaches Heala through Apple Health or Health Connect. No new hardware to buy.
If recovery should sit next to food, training, weight and cycle data, Heala keeps them together.
Keep the strap. Join the Heala waitlist, let its data flow in, and compare the two scores for a month.
Quick answers
Can I use WHOOP and Heala together?
Yes. Heala reads Apple Health and Health Connect, so anything WHOOP shares there — workouts, sleep — flows in automatically. Many people will run both for a while: the strap keeps measuring, and Heala puts the results next to food and training. Nothing about the setup is either/or.
Does Heala's recovery score work without any wearable?
Yes. The score is built around sleep, overnight HRV, resting heart rate and strain, plus corroborating signals like wrist temperature when a wearable supplies them. With a watch, the overnight numbers come from the wearable. Without one, Heala estimates from phone sleep data and the training you log. A watch sharpens it — overnight HRV especially — but it is not a requirement.
Will my WHOOP history move over?
Partly. Whatever WHOOP has written to Apple Health — workouts and sleep, if you enabled sharing — is readable by Heala. WHOOP's own recovery and strain scores are proprietary and stay in WHOOP; Heala computes its own from the underlying signals. Expect the two scores to disagree some mornings: different models, same inputs.
