Heala vs Nike Run Club

Nike Run Club is free and genuinely good, which makes this a fair question: what does a paid app add for a runner?

Nike Run Club
  • Free
  • Guided runs with coaching audio
  • Training plans for races
  • A clean run history
Heala
  • GPS runs and routes
  • Runs read as training load
  • Food against calories out
  • Strength work alongside
  • Sleep and recovery
A run app tells you about the run. The rest of the week is what decides how the run goes.

What NRC does well, for nothing

Guided runs. Audio coaching during a run is a genuinely good format and Nike produces it better than almost anyone.

Race plans. Structured build-ups to a 5k, 10k, half or full, free of charge.

It costs nothing, which is a serious argument and one this page is not going to pretend away.

What a runner is missing without the rest

Fuelling. Under-eating is the most common reason a training block falls apart, and a run app has no idea what you ate.

Strength. Runners who lift get injured less; a run-only app does not program it or track it.

Recovery in context. A hard session on four hours of sleep in a deficit is a different session, and only an app holding all three can see that.

The honest recommendation

If you only run and only want the run tracked, NRC is free and fine. The moment you are also lifting, eating deliberately, or wondering why the legs feel dead on Thursday, one app holding all of it is worth more than the run screen itself.

Questions

Is Heala free for running?

Cardio with GPS is on the free plan, uncapped. The AI coach is what has a weekly allowance on Free.

Does it have guided audio runs?

No. Heala plans and records; it does not produce coaching audio.
