Sleep tracking without a watch
Most sleep advice assumes you are wearing something to bed. If you are not, here is what is still measurable — and what genuinely is not.
- Duration
- Bed and wake times
- Consistency across the week
- How it meets your training
- Deep and REM staging
- Overnight HRV
- Resting heart rate
- Skin temperature
What works without hardware
Duration and timing. You tell the app when you went to bed and when you got up, or your phone already knows from your alarm and screen time, and duration is the single most useful sleep number there is.
Consistency. Going to bed at wildly different times is one of the strongest predictors of feeling terrible, and it needs no sensor to detect.
How it interacts with everything else. Heala reads sleep against your training load and your eating, which is where the useful advice actually comes from.
What genuinely needs a sensor
Sleep stages. Deep, REM and light sleep come from movement and heart-rate patterns, and a phone on a bedside table cannot see them. Any app claiming otherwise from a phone alone is guessing.
Overnight HRV, resting heart rate and temperature. These are the signals that catch illness and heavy fatigue early, and they need something on your body.
A reasonable middle
Log the hours honestly for a fortnight and you will learn more than most people with a ring learn in a month, because the biggest wins are duration and regularity, not stage percentages.
If you later add a watch or a ring, Heala reads it through Apple Health or Health Connect and the same screens get sharper.
Questions
Can an app track my sleep stages from my phone?
Not reliably. Stage detection needs movement and heart-rate data from something worn on the body.
Is duration enough to be useful?
For most people, yes. Duration and consistency explain far more day-to-day variance than stage breakdowns do.
Which wearables sharpen it?
Anything writing to Apple Health or Health Connect — Apple Watch, Oura, WHOOP, Garmin, Fitbit, Withings.
The quiz is free, takes about four minutes and needs no card. It ends with your calorie target, your macros and a training week you can look at.
