How many steps a day?

Ten thousand is a marketing number from the 1960s. The real answer is lower than that, and the reason to care is different from the one you have been given.

Where 10,000 came from

A Japanese pedometer marketed around the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, whose name punned on the figure. It was a slogan, not a finding, and it has outlived every study since.

What the research broadly shows

Mortality risk falls steeply as daily steps rise from very low counts, and the curve flattens well before ten thousand — much of the benefit is accumulated by roughly seven to nine thousand for middle-aged and older adults.

More is still better, with diminishing returns. Going from two thousand to six thousand matters enormously; going from nine to twelve thousand matters much less.

Why steps matter in a diet specifically

Non-exercise activity falls involuntarily when you are in a deficit — less fidgeting, slower walking, more sitting. It is one of the main reasons a deficit stops working without anything obvious changing.

A step count makes that visible. If your average has quietly dropped by two thousand a day, you have found your plateau without touching your food.

This is the single best argument for tracking steps: not the target, but the trend.

A practical target

Look at your own current average for a fortnight and add a thousand or two. A target you clear most days beats an aspirational one you miss, and consistency across the week matters more than any single big day.

Questions

Is 10,000 steps a scientific number?

No. It began as a 1960s pedometer marketing figure. The evidence supports substantial benefit at lower counts, with returns flattening as the number rises.

Do steps count as cardio?

Walking is genuine activity and contributes meaningfully to daily expenditure, though it does not replace higher-intensity training for cardiovascular fitness.

Why do my steps drop when I diet?

Non-exercise activity falls involuntarily in a deficit. It is one of the most common hidden causes of a stall.
