How to lose belly fat
The honest version of this page is short and unpopular: you cannot choose where fat comes off. What you can do is lose fat, and wait for your body to get to that bit.

- Where fat comes off first
- Your fat distribution pattern

Why spot reduction does not work
Doing hundreds of crunches trains the abdominal muscles. It does not preferentially take fat from the tissue above them, because fat is mobilised into the bloodstream and used wherever energy is needed, not drained locally from the nearest muscle.
This has been tested repeatedly — training one limb, measuring fat loss in both — and the effect does not appear in any meaningful amount.
Where fat actually comes off
In an order largely set by genetics and hormones, and for many people the abdomen is late in that order. That is not a training error; it is distribution.
The practical consequence is uncomfortable: the last place to change is the place people are usually doing this for, so the final stretch takes the most patience.
What does work
A sustained calorie deficit. This is the whole mechanism. Everything else on this list supports it.
Enough protein and resistance training. They decide how much of the loss is fat rather than muscle, which determines what you look like at the end.
Sleep. Short sleep shifts the composition of loss toward lean tissue and makes appetite regulation harder.
Time. Half a per cent to one per cent of bodyweight a week. Faster costs muscle and rarely holds.
The visceral fat footnote
The fat inside the abdomen, around the organs, is more metabolically active than the fat under the skin — and it responds well to exercise and to modest weight loss.
So the health benefit of losing abdominal fat arrives earlier than the appearance benefit, which is worth knowing when the mirror is being slow.
What to measure instead of the mirror
Waist circumference at the same spot, monthly. Photographs in the same light. A body scan you can compare across months. Weekly average weight.
Daily mirror checks measure lighting and bloating.
Questions
Can I target belly fat with ab exercises?
No. Spot reduction has been tested and does not produce meaningful localised fat loss. Ab training builds the muscle; a deficit removes the fat.
Why is my stomach the last place to change?
Fat distribution and the order of mobilisation are largely genetic and hormonal. For many people the abdomen is late in that order.
How long does it take?
At a sustainable half to one per cent of bodyweight per week, most people are looking at months rather than weeks.
The quiz is free, takes about four minutes and needs no card. It ends with your calorie target, your macros and a training week you can look at.
