Does fasted training burn more fat?

During the session, yes. Over the week, no — and the week is the only timescale that determines what you look like.

During the session
  • More fat oxidised while fasted
  • Less carbohydrate used
  • Measurable and real
Across the week
  • Total fat loss is set by energy balance
  • The body compensates later in the day
  • No meaningful advantage
The distinction almost every article about this misses.

What actually happens

Fasted, your body has less readily available carbohydrate, so a larger share of the fuel burned during that session comes from fat. This is measurable and it is true.

It is also not the thing that matters. Fat balance over days is what changes body composition, and the body adjusts fuel use across the rest of the day to compensate. Studies comparing fasted and fed training with matched calories find no meaningful difference in fat loss.

Where it can cost you

Hard sessions often go worse fasted — lower output, fewer quality reps, higher perceived effort. Since training quality drives adaptation, that is a real cost for no fat-loss benefit.

For long or intense endurance work, training fasted regularly can undercut both the session and recovery from it.

Where it is fine

Easy cardio and walking. Most people are perfectly comfortable fasted for that and it makes no difference either way.

If you simply prefer it — it feels better, it fits the morning, food before training makes you nauseous — then do it. Preference is a legitimate reason and adherence is the actual variable.

Questions

Should I do cardio on an empty stomach?

For easy cardio it makes little difference — do what you prefer. For hard sessions, eating first usually produces better training.

Does fasted training burn more fat overall?

No. It shifts fuel use within the session; total fat loss is determined by energy balance across days.

Should I lift fasted?

Most people perform better having eaten. If fasted lifting feels fine to you, it is not harmful.
