3D body scan from photos: what an app can and cannot measure

A 3D body scan app turns four photos from an ordinary phone camera into a rotatable 3D body and a set of measurement estimates. The numbers are for tracking change month to month, not for replacing a tape measure or a clinical scan.

What is a 3D body scan from photos?

A 3D body scan from photos is an app that builds a three-dimensional model of your body, and estimates measurements from it, using pictures you take with a normal phone camera. There is no booth, no depth sensor and no appointment.

Search results for this are a mix of tailoring and clothing-fit tools, general 3D object scanners and a few body-tracking apps. They do different jobs, so decide first whether you want measurements for clothes or a way to see your body change over months.

How does Heala turn four photos into a 3D body?

You take four guided photos in fitted clothing: front, back, left and right. A front photo alone works, and the other three make the body fuller. The scan takes roughly two minutes of your time, and the 3D body generates in the background.

From the front and side pair, with your height as the scale, Heala estimates ten circumferences: neck, shoulder, chest, arm, forearm, waist, stomach, hip, thigh and calf. It adds a body-fat estimate, and every value is editable before it saves. The body renders on your phone, so you can drag to rotate and pinch to zoom. See the 3D body scan for the full walkthrough.

How do you take photos that give a good scan?

Use even lighting, fitted clothing and a plain background, because the estimates are only as good as the outline the app can see. Hold the phone at the same height and distance each time, stand in the same relaxed pose, and use the same spot in your home.

Consistency matters more than perfection. A slightly imperfect scan taken the same way every month compares far better than a perfect one you can never repeat.

How accurate are the measurements?

In good conditions, Heala's circumference estimates land within roughly 1 to 3 cm. That is accurate enough to see a waist shrink or a thigh grow over twelve weeks, and not accurate enough to order a tailored suit from.

The same logic applies to body fat. A photo estimate is a trend tool, which is why the honest use is comparing like with like. The error bars against DEXA, calipers and smart scales are in how accurate a photo body scan is, honestly.

How should you use a scan month to month?

Scan again after a month or more and put the two bodies side by side. Progress photos do this crudely; a body you can turn lets you compare the same pose from the same angles every time.

Read it alongside the tape and the scale, not instead of them. Heala's weight trend and the waist measurement that beats weight give the scan context, because several slow signals agree more often than one noisy one.

Worth keeping: “Compare the same pose from the same angles, and the scan does its job.”

What is a photo body scan not?

It is not a DEXA scan and it is not a medical measurement. Heala is not a medical device, and the scan makes no diagnostic claims. If you need clinical numbers, get a clinical scan.

Your photos and the generated body sit in private storage tied to your account, and you can delete them. Generating a 3D body spends a scan credit or a monthly Pro allowance; the measurement estimate itself is free.

How to take your first scan

1
Set up the space

Pick a plain wall with even light, and wear fitted clothing so the outline is clear.

2
Take the four photos

Front, back, left and right, standing relaxed, with the phone at the same height each time.

3
Check the numbers

Look over the ten estimates and edit any that look off before you save them.

4
Repeat monthly

Scan again in the same spot and pose, then compare the two bodies side by side.

Quick answers

Is there an app that makes a 3D body scan from photos?

Yes. Heala builds a rotatable 3D body from four guided phone photos and estimates ten circumferences plus body fat. It is free to download on iPhone, and Android is coming soon. Generating the 3D body uses a scan credit or a Pro allowance.

Do I need a special camera for a 3D body scan?

No. Any modern phone camera works. What helps most is even lighting, fitted clothing, a plain background and the same pose and distance each time, so that scans taken weeks apart can be compared fairly.

How accurate is a body scan from photos?

In good conditions, Heala's circumference estimates land within roughly 1 to 3 cm. That suits tracking change over months. It is not a medical measurement or a replacement for a tape measure when exact sizes matter.

How many photos does a 3D body scan need?

Heala asks for four: front, back, left and right. A front photo alone works, and the other three make the 3D body fuller. The scan takes about two minutes of your time, and the body generates in the background.

Are my body scan photos private?

Heala keeps your photos and the generated 3D body in private storage tied to your account, and you can delete them. Measurements are editable before they save, so you decide what is stored.
