How to take progress photos that actually compare

Progress photos compare only when light, time of day, distance, clothing and pose match every time. Shoot relaxed from the same three angles every two to four weeks, then put two photos side by side. Heala stores them privately and does the side-by-side.

Why do most progress photos fail?

The conditions change between shots. Different light, a different time of day, different posture and different degrees of flexing each move how a body looks, and any one of them can be larger than a month of genuine change. The comparison ends up measuring the conditions rather than you.

That is why a month of real progress can look like nothing, or like a transformation, purely because of lighting. The photo is not lying; it is answering a different question from the one you asked.

What should you keep the same in every photo?

Place and light. Use the same spot with natural, indirect light. Overhead spotlights carve shadows into an abdomen and make it look different from one day to the next. Time of day. Ideally morning, before eating.

Clothing, distance and height. Wear the same thing, stand the same distance away and hold the phone at the same height. Pose. Stay relaxed rather than flexed, and use the same three angles each time: front, side and back. Flexed photos vary far more between sessions and are harder to compare honestly.

How often should you take progress photos?

Every two to four weeks. Shoot more often than that and you are mostly photographing lighting and bloating, not change. A slower rhythm also matches how the other numbers behave: the weight on the scale wobbles day to day, as explained in your weight has a weekly rhythm.

If the photos look the same for a month, that is not failure. The first week of any diet change is largely water, covered in the first week is water, and visible change takes longer than that.

How do you compare two photos properly?

Put two photos from the same angle next to each other and move between them, rather than scrolling a camera roll. In Heala, any two photos can be opened in a before-and-after slider, so a comparison across three months is one gesture. See progress photos that are actually comparable.

Photos sit next to your weight trend and body scans, which is what turns three images into evidence. A scan adds numbers to the picture: four guided photos give a 3D body, ten circumference estimates and a body-fat estimate, all trend tools rather than medical measurements. How far to trust them is in how accurate is a photo body scan.

Worth keeping: “A photo taken differently is a photo that compares nothing.”

Quick answers

How often should I take progress photos?

Every two to four weeks. More often than that and you are mostly photographing lighting and bloating rather than change. Keep the same spot, light, time of day, clothing, distance and phone height so that the only thing that differs between two photos is you.

Should I flex in progress photos?

Take them relaxed. Flexed photos vary far more between sessions, because how hard you tense changes how the same body looks. Relaxed photos from the same three angles, front, side and back, are much easier to compare honestly across many months.

Why do my progress photos look different on different days?

Usually the conditions changed, not your body. Light, time of day, posture, clothing and flexing can each outweigh a month of real change. Fix those, shoot every two to four weeks and compare two photos side by side to see the genuine difference.

Does Heala keep my progress photos private?

Yes. Photos are stored privately against your account, never public and never shared by default, and you can delete any of them or remove everything with your account. Any two can be compared side by side with a before-and-after slider.

Do I need a body scan as well as progress photos?

No, but they work well together. Photos show shape; a Heala scan adds numbers from four guided photos, including ten circumference estimates and a body-fat estimate. These are trend tools, not medical measurements, and are best read month to month.
