10,000 steps was a marketing number. The curve bends at 7,000

The 10,000-step target was coined to sell a Japanese pedometer in 1965. Modern cohort studies put the bend in the benefit curve closer to 7,000 steps a day — and show the first few thousand do most of the work.

The number came from an advert

In 1965 the Japanese firm Yamasa launched a pedometer called manpo-kei — 'the 10,000-step meter'. The number was chosen for the campaign, not derived from a trial; it was reportedly picked partly because the character for 10,000 resembles a person walking. It stuck because it is round, memorable, and roughly double what a desk worker manages. Sixty years later it is still the default target in most phones and watches. The longevity of a number is not evidence for it.

What the cohorts actually show

When researchers finally tested the number, the shape of the answer mattered more than any point on it. A 2019 cohort of older women found mortality falling steeply from about 2,700 steps a day, with the benefit levelling off near 7,500. A 2022 meta-analysis pooling 15 cohorts and roughly 47,000 adults found the same shape: risk kept falling to about 6,000–8,000 steps a day for people over 60, and 8,000–10,000 for younger adults.

The curve is the finding. It rises steeply at the low end — moving from 2,000 to 4,000 steps buys a larger risk reduction than moving from 8,000 to 10,000 — then flattens. These are observational cohorts, so the curve shows association rather than proven cause, but the shape repeats across studies and age groups. Nothing bad happens past the bend. Nothing much happens either.

What a step count cannot tell you

A step counter records contacts with the ground, nothing else. It cannot see intensity: 7,000 brisk steps and 7,000 shuffles print the same number, and once total volume is accounted for, the evidence on pace is genuinely mixed. It cannot see cycling, swimming, rowing or a loaded carry — hard cardio that adds zero steps. It cannot tell you whether today's count came in one 60-minute walk or forty fragments. The count is a volume proxy. Useful, but it is measuring your legs, not your heart.

Use the bend, not the badge

Treat 7,000 as a reference point on a curve, not a pass mark. If you average 3,000 today, the data says your next 2,000 steps are the most valuable ones available — worth more than the last 2,000 of someone chasing 12,000. If you already sit at 9,000, more steps are the least efficient improvement left; intensity, strength work and sleep will pay better. A target is a floor for the sedentary, not a ceiling for anyone.

Quick answers

Is 10,000 steps a day bad advice?

No — it is just not a threshold. Nothing in the cohort data suggests harm above the bend, and some people like the round number. The problem is the reverse implication: that 6,000 steps is failure. Most of the measurable mortality benefit has arrived by 6,000–8,000 daily steps for older adults, so missing 10,000 is not missing the benefit.

How many steps should I actually aim for?

Start from your own average, not a universal number. If you currently do 3,000, aiming at 5,000 captures the steepest part of the curve. Cohort data puts the plateau around 6,000–8,000 daily steps for over-60s and 8,000–10,000 for younger adults. Treat those as long-term reference points, not daily pass marks.

Do short bursts and housework steps count?

Yes. The cohort studies count total accumulated daily steps however they arrive — fragments included. What a step total cannot capture is non-stepping work: cycling, swimming and rowing add nothing to the count while working the heart hard. If those are your main training, judge the day by strain or heart-rate data, not steps.
